AT&T: Your plastic bag. Delivered.

I purchased an iPhone during the refurb sale that AT&T had last week. In two working days I got my 16 gig iPhone, times two. Two identical boxes, two identical iPhones and two identical charges on my debit card. Given the good deal, I decided to keep both . Imagine my surprise when my wife called me at work the next day to report that a third box had arrived from AT&T via DHL 2-day shipping, and that it was twice the size of either of the iPhone boxes. Given the previous day’s spoils, I couldn’t wait to get home.

Arriving at my house, I located the box and sat down with it on the couch. It was very, very light, but I’ve become accustomed to good things not weighing much. Pulling out my trusty Swiss Tech Utili-Key, I carefully sliced open my unexpected delivery. Inside was a packing slip with a single line item:

75011 MISC iPhone PPA BAG … $0.00

Yes, it was an unsolicited, rush delivery, plastic iPhone bag. This is definitely not a first for AT&T and the monetary waste involved in packing and shipping a completely unnecessary plastic bag is, I assume, passed back to the consumer. Next time you look at your AT&T bill, you can think about my MISC iPhone PPA BAG … which I’ll be cherishing forever. Or at least until the novelty wears off.

3G iPhone Case Revealed?

A company called XSKN has revealed a case design described as an “iPhone 3G” case. The 3G version of the case is shown here, followed by the Original iPhone case:

The differences are slight, but correspond to the leaked specs given to case manufacturers. It also appears to be slightly thicker which was also previously claimed. The image of the iPhone itself appears to be a stock photo of the original iPhone, so no conclusions can be drawn from the icons and interface seen.

Rotary dial for iPhone

iphone rotary dial I am one of the few people left in the country that owns and uses a rotary-dial telephone. Call me old-fashioned, but I just like the sound of that bell instead of an electronic noise when the phone rings. Now you can extend part of that experience (at least the labored dialing part) to your iPhone. Minnesota-based CodeMorphic has released RetroPhone, an application that simulates the rotary dial mechanism on the screen of your iPhone.

Their website doesn’t have a whole lot of information yet, but you can watch a video of the software in action at the St. Paul Pioneer Press’s Your Tech Weblog. Of course, RetroPhone doesn’t replicate the satisfying tactile response, but all the joy of spending two hours to dial an international phone number can be entirely yours.

Awesome iPhone case

iPhone Wide Angle Lens

 iphone wide angle lens

For those that rely on their iPhone for photographs, it might be important to try to squeeze as much quality as you can out of it. Personally I’d just rather take my actual camera, I never have been satisfied with any phone’s quality of pictures. However, for some it doesn’t matter as much to get high quality, just to get as much picture as they can out of the iPhone.

Well for those that are addicted to using their iPhone for pics this wide angle lens might be something to snag. It’s just a simple little cap that can be slipped over the top of your iPhone.

However, sadly you’ll have to take off the case to put it on. USB Fever is offering them for $11.99, they will be available to ship out right around February 29th.

iPhone wide angle lens camera attachment

Don’t get too excited- this is in no way an internal camera upgrade or modification for the iPhone. This nifty little piece of plastic will, however, let you take wide-angle shots using just your cell phone. Simply slip the lens attachment over the top of the iPhone and snap away- the lens magnifies your image to 0.68X, which means you can photograph more of your surroundings that with the regular lens. The only disadvantage we can see is that your photos will have a slight fisheye effect to them, but that’s a small price to pay for such a nifty gadget.

The list appears a bit heavy on iPhone cases,

Combo iPhone case & battery

Combo iPhone case & batteryMophie’s last product of note was a combination iPod shuffle case/bottle-opener; of use to some, perhaps, but a little niche for my liking. They’re following up with something far more useful, the mStation Mophie juice pack for iPhone - basically a soft-touch, non-slip case for the cellphone with a built in LiIon battery pack that adds an additional 250hrs of standby, 8hrs of talktime, 6hrs of surfing, 7hrs of video or 24hrs of audio playback.

What’s nice is that they’ve obviously given some thought to the whole package rather than rushed it out to stores. The case comes fully-charged and ready for use; there’s a four-LED indicator to show how much power is left; and it recharges using a standard 30-pin Apple dock connector rather than some proprietary plug.

It’ll be available December 21st for a decidedly reasonable $99.95, with a version for the iPod Touch landing in January next year.

Pocket Mirror iPhone

Gadget screens that double up as vanity mirrors seemed a pretty silly idea at first, but having seen numerous people - male and female - use their cellphone to check for stray mascara or spinach in teeth, I suppose it has some degree of merit.  If you’ve been disappointed at not being able to harness your iPhone to suss out whether your nose-hair needs trimming, then perhaps the Artwizz MirrorFilm screen protector will cheer you up.

Basically a reflective, self-adhesive sheet with cut-outs for the iPhone’s Home button, earpiece and proximity sensor, it might not look as slick as, say, LG’s Shine but for around $10 you can’t complain too loudly.  iLounge did find it tricky to remove air bubbles, but if you’ve a steady hand and some patience MirrorFilm might mark the end of embarrassing “did you know your glass eye is in back-to-front?” situations.
